October 2017: Fab Fall Favourites

October is hands down one of my favourite months– in my home town it usually marks the end of the Autumn and the beginning of a long, cold Winter.

I don’t know about you guys, but this month just completely got away from me. I think part of it has to do with the fact that I’m still getting back in the swing of things after such a fun summer in the mountains— I spent most of October stunned by the fact that it wasn’t still August!

brb, still mentally on top of this mountain.

When I wasn’t busy forgetting what day it was, October actually had a lot of fun in store for me. I spent most of the month catching up with friends, hunting for bargains in Consignment Stores, and hitting up Edmonton’s Brewery district for some retail therapy. I even managed to sneak in a quick trip to Calgary to impose on a couple of besties who live down there– if there’s one thing this broke blogger knows how to do, it’s mooch.

But now it’s time to get back to reality in this crazy city of mine! With only a few days left in October it’s time for me to round off my end of season makeup favourites.

Stila “Eyes are the Window” Palette in Spirit

IMG_2677

This month I did my semi-annual purse purge (you know, the one you hate to do when it comes time to change over from your summer to winter bags) and happened upon a gift certificate to LUX Beauty Boutique here in Edmonton. At first I thought it was something the previous owner had left behind (hello, the joys of buying secondhand) when I realised that Emily and I had actually won the gift certificates at an online convocation event– meaning that the gift card had been sitting in my wallet since July.

Naturally I rushed out to get an expensive goodie for my makeup bag, because duh– Treat Yo’ Self!

giphy (1)

I’ve always loved Stila but normally can’t afford it– $60 for this palette is way above my standard budget! Of course, it was worth the splurge. These colours are so pigmented and totally perfect for Fall– and the reds will look amazing into the holiday season!

Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lip Colour(s)

IMG_2676

This babies are a summer find that I’ve been working into Fall. We all know I love a good lippie, but it was my friend Jess who introduced me to these beautiful new creations by Revlon!

21584235_10155295937831997_1069724922_o

Seen here, looking fabulous.

Think all the staying power of a lip stain combined with the pigment of a lipstick. One swipe from these bad boys and your lips stay coloured for hours– plus, they’re matte and totally perfect for winter wear!

E.L.F Highlight

IMG_2678

Another returning find, this puppy made the list based solely on how much I love it– not to mention the fact that every girl I recommend it to goes nuts for it. I recently ran out of my highlight stock pile and was nervous to reorder (did they change the formula? Would it still work on my skin tone? Would it still last for hours?) and I’m happy to report that this highlight is still the best in the low budget game.

giphy (85)

If you haven’t tried any E.L.F products yet you’re missing out– their highlights in particular are super pigmented, meaning a little goes a long way. Put on a little for a natural glow, or layer it on for bolder shine!

Essence “Make Me Brow” Brow Filler

IMG_2679

I’m usually a fan of pencils for shaping my brows, but I was surprised to discover how much I love this gel formula. I stumbled across it about a week ago when my brows were going through some growing pains and needed something more natural looking to fill them in.

giphy (3).gif

This liquid formula is light and natural feeling once on, but I think the real treasure is the application wand– the brush is basically like a mascara wand and actually simulates the look of hair when applied to sparser areas. Definitely a game changer!

Consignment & Thrift Finds: Autumn 2017

In case you couldn’t tell by my blog name: I’m a huge fan of saving a quick dollar. Unfortunately, I’m also a huge fan of shopping.

giphy (10)

I’ve been into second hand thrifting for a while now, but let’s face it– as much as I like wading through piles of discards to find a real treasure it can get a little tiresome.

Enter: the utopia that is the Consignment Store.

giphy.gif

The beauty of the Consignment Store is that someone has already done the digging for you– meaning that your pieces are still second-hand, but they’re in good enough condition that they can be resold. In other words– you’re getting a high quality, low price second hand item.

Because inventory turn-over can be pretty quick in the second hand business, I try to hit up my local Thrift, Resale, and Consignment Stores about twice a month. Here are my best finds for September!

Betsy Johnson Bag:

  • Retails for: $128
  • Purchased for: $45

IMG_2255

Perhaps one of my favourite finds to date is this Betsy Johnson bag. I pretty much fell in love with Betsy’s signature heart stitching and bow detailing. It was originally priced at $55 dollars, but I managed to talk the sales girl into giving me an additional 10 bucks off due to a missing shoulder strap. Found at: Red Pony Consignment in Edmonton.

Michael Kors Rosegold Watch

  • Retails for: $335
  • Purchased for: $90

FullSizeRender

I’ve always been a sucker for rosegold on anyone else, and when I saw this watch I literally couldn’t resist. Although the watch has a slightly scratched face and desperately needs a new battery, one quick google told me that it was worth it– no need to haggle with this one. Found at: Peacock Boutique Consignment in Calgary.

Random Stallion Sweater

  • Retails for: ???
  • Purchased for: $8.99

FullSizeRender (1)

This purchase is 100% random and probably the riskiest on this list, but let me explain– I’ve always loved a thick, woollen sweater with animal detailing for autumn, and a piece like this would be perfect for into the holidays. Although this sweater has no labelling (which leads me to suspect it was made by someone’s very talented grandmother or was stolen from a sweatshop) I’ve decided it’s worth its weight in sentimental gold. Found at: Value Village off Whyte in Edmonton.

Forever 21 Necklace

  • Retails for: $11.99
  • Purchased for: $2.99

FullSizeRender (2)

Although this is another VV find, this one is a lot less sketchy. This piece is actually an exact dupe of a necklace I loved but accidentally gave away inside the pocket of an old Matt and Nat bag during an unfortunate donation incident some 3 years ago. Hell, for all I know it’s the exact same necklace. Found at: Value Village off Whyte in Edmonton.

Aritzia Plaid Blouse

  • Retails for: $65
  • Purchased for: $12.99

IMG_2155

In case you couldn’t tell by this post, I’m obsessed with this plaid blouse. It’s pretty much the perfect go-to piece for any fall outfit, and since acquiring it it’s pretty much haunted my instagram posts and snapchat stories. And with over $40 dollars off the original price– can I get a hell yes? Found at: Velour Clothing Exchange in Calgary.

Outfit Update: Autumn Vibes

Hey Broke Babes! This week has been one of the craziest since I’ve returned from Kananaskis.

I swear I’ve spent about half my time running around the city doing errands, fixing up my car, catching up with friends and family, unpacking, and taking photos for the relaunch of my website.

giphy (74)

I know. I’m tired just thinking about it.

I haven’t really had much time to spend thinking about what I’m going to wear– lucky for me I’ve found the perfect outfit to wear day in and day out during this hectic time!

Other than my standard denim, this outfit features two new pieces that I’m absolutely in love with: first, this awesome brown leather jacket that I scored from Forever 21 for only $24.99 (with similar styles featured here, here, and here. Click the affiliate links to shop!) The other is a vintage Aritzia plaid top that I found for only $12.99 in Calgary’s Velour Vintage Consignment store. So cute for fall, and I love the way the plaid’s colors play in different light!

Pretty in Pink: 15 Pieces That Have Me Totally Blushing

If you’ve been past any boutique windows in the past few weeks, you’ll notice that spring has sprung– and with it, brought an onslaught of all things pink.

If you read my earlier post about my predictions for the biggest trends of 2017, you’ll know I was dead on with predicting the rise of blush; the pretty pink hue has been dubbed the color of the season. But it doesn’t stop there– already trend analysts are predicting pink’s staying power, starting with a soft blush and eventually bursting into a hot pink for the Summer and fading into a beautiful jewelled magenta come Autumn.

I love to live in the now, so I figured I’d start what I’m calling the Period of Pink with my favorite blush picks of the season.

Women’s Leith Plisse Pleated Skirt

You all know me. I’m a sucker for a ballet-style tulle skirt. Pair this with a crop top and heels and you’re set.

Deux Lux Blossoms Pouch

aa3d34b5768d6a36a628e443d3a50c62_best

This pouch is basically hand-held spring time.

Express Slim Fit Convertible Sleeve Portofino Shirt

“But Lisa,” you will sigh, pausing in your scrolling to roll your eyes. “It’s just a button down.”

Every button down is a just button down. This is adorable, leave me alone.

AE Bomber Jacket

100d6e791af8405b4ef62caebe94bd1d_best

Cute, comfortable, and practical. Who doesn’t love a bomber?

AE Button Front Maxi Skirt

8fa5f37cddec646393e118c1eda099b5_best

Okay, okay, so the skirt isn’t technically blush. But this is a great way to incorporate the color into your wardrobe if you’re hesitant, or if you suspect head-to-toe pink isn’t your style.

Converse Women’s Chuck Taylor Dainty Casual Sneakers

9c94f3c08ea35d0658ef62d90b071d54_best

Odds are you already own these in some form or another, but if you’ve yet to pick up a pair I highly recommend grabbing these in blush this season. They’re an awesome alternative to the white converse that’s been so trendy the last few summers.

Topshop Faux Leather Pencil Skirt

50721f4c33a679715416603492ff4a5d_best

I’m obsessed with this piece. The pink makes it fun and girly, while the leather gives an undeniable edge of badassery.

Women’s Nordstrom Wildflower Spray Scarf

2bb9eae030c1a366ac1a4c6a2278303d_best

Another piece for the timid. This scarf is also awesome because it’s color combination can be worn from Spring into Autumn.

Lush Blouson Chiffon Skater Dress

I wish I could put emojis here because ~*heart eyes*~

Michael Antonio Jaxine Heel

50’s inspired footwear is very in, and you really can’t beat the subtle funk of the snakeskin pattern printed here.

Express High Waisted Tulle Midi Skirt

3849f3f063ba7e3b1913c806bc492716_best

I can sense you judging me for including another tulle skirt on this list but I’m choosing to ignore it.

MANGO Flap Tote Bag

92731877ee42f6b71187cec63189cf3d_best.jpg

This blush is so subtle it’s almost a neutral, which is beautiful in its own right. Paired with the rose gold finishes, how can you not love it?

Bb Dakota Halden A-Line Dress

68e3de954f9f3f08b43740150cb3ba5a_best

Although this dress may look a little tricky, the A-line silhouette is actually flattering on almost every body type. Plus, the off the shoulder look is perfect for anyone who possesses collar bones.

Wayf Sweet Symphony V-Neck Blouse

2b70646a83c91d42660dfa1a2127d46d_best

Cute, simple. Just trendy enough. Love it.

Topshop Killer Studded Chelsea Boot

77308770b7013aa58da3960edf73d1bd_best

These are just so extra, you can’t help but love them. Pair with ripped skinny jeans and you’re golden.
