Here are 6 locations in Edmonton that make for the perfect Instagram photo shoot.

The Alberta Legislature Building & Grounds

Located in the heart of the city, this beautiful building offers a historic background for any photo. The Greek, Roman, and French architectural influences add elegance to the surrounding fountains and trees. This spot is great because it’s perfect in the summer, and in the winter. It may not iconic to the rest of the world, but it’s certainly iconic in YEG and a great feature on your Instagram page.

Whyte Avenue

Did you really think this one wouldn’t be on our list? If anyone knows Edmonton, they know that Whyte Ave is a truly unique pocket of the city featuring some amazing buildings, people, and graffiti. There’s not one best spot on Whyte Ave for an Insta photo. There’s plenty! So go explore, and don’t be scared to walk down a few back alleys. That’s where you’ll find some of the best photo shoot locations.

The End of the World

To get the best views of Edmonton’s river valley and the North Saskatchewan River visit 7433 Saskatchewan Dr NW. You won’t be disappointed. This spot has gained popularity for its breathtaking views, and because it makes for a great Instagram photo. Guaranteed likes on this one! Just be careful if you plan on climbing out to the edge.

Edmonton’s Neon Sign Museum

A downtown treasure. The Neon Sign Museum is located on 104 Ave & 104 Street, across from Mercer Tavern. Installed by the City of Edmonton, it features a collection of functional historic signs that tell a story about Edmonton’s neon past. Pretty cool, right? It’s also open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Check out this spot during the day, and at night for some eye-catching photos.

Muttart Conservatory

Thought it was just for science nerds and school field trips? Think again. The Muttart Pyramids are full of exotic plants that can make you feel like you’re somewhere else. The scenery also makes for the perfect Instagram photo. Add some life to your profile!

Edmonton Ice Castles

Winter isn’t all that bad. Every year, magnificent ice castles are built in Hawrelak Park. You have to pay admission, but once you’re in you can enjoy all the beauty the castles have to offer. The colours of the ice make any photo look stunning. Hint: the day time lighting is also great for selfies!

Instagram is a visual social media platform based entirely on photo and video posts. With 700 million active users, Instagram is the perfect place to use eye-catching images to attract business. Instagram posts rely heavily on hashtags and a strong following in order to gain exposure and engagement, but with the right technique any Instagram account is capable of gaining popularity.

This platform should be primarily used for engaging with the larger community, and tailoring a feed that suits your audience’s exact wants and needs in order to gain and maintain popularity.

Using Instagram to engage with followers, a.k.a. potential clients and customers, is actually pretty easy. Engaging with users on Instagram mainly consists of following accounts, liking and commenting on posts, and sending direct messages. The real struggle is finding the right accounts to follow, and engaging with them effectively.

Since you’re building a business, you will mainly want to follow accounts of people who you feel could be potential clients. Edmonton based company? Follow any account based in YEG. Aimed more towards women? Follow them all! Instagram is the best social network to build your following and connect with your community at large.

Once you have built your following, and have a feel about the type of audience your account attracts, you can tailor your content to fit exactly what your audience wants to see. This skill takes time to master so the more research you can do about your audience, the more successful your account, and your business will be.

Facebook is the most popular social network in the world, with approximately 1.8 billion active users. Although a Facebook page may seem similar to a website, it has many unique features that will turn your business into a success. Since Facebook pages are more searchable on Google (and other search engines) compared to the other social media sites, it’s important that your business has one.

At Copper, we see Facebook as the link to all your other online activity that will attract business from near and far. Facebook’s sharing and posting features are key in driving traffic to your business. Facebook is used for sharing your very best Instagram photos, sharing your latest blog posts, sharing articles you’ve researched that may be interesting to your followers, and everything in between.

Twitter is a conversational social network that consists of short text-based tweets that can be accompanied by images, and hashtags. Around 300 million users are active on Twitter, but the lower number shouldn’t scare you away. This site still has a lot to offer!

At Copper, we believe that Twitter should be used to create relationships and dialogs with your followers. It’s the perfect networking tool. Twitter’s conversational structure makes it a little less formal than Instagram and Facebook, which is great for talking directly to other people in a relaxed, yet familiar medium.

The most important reason your small business should use Twitter is because Twitter lets you engage your customers. Of course, you should be tweeting out your latest blogs and such, but Twitter is often used for customers to reach out to a business too. By responding quickly you can show customers that you care about their questions and concerns. Not only that, but you can use Twitter to find out everything your audience has to say about you: what they love, what they hate, and where they think you can improve. You can use this valuable information to make your business even better!

To sum it up, social media is about finding what works best for you and your business. Each site is used for different things, which can attract different clientele. Practice makes perfect, so give all three sites a chance and don’t give up too easily. It takes time to build a brand and a following, but at least now you have a place to start!

Tip Tuesday: Take Advantage of Trending Hashtags

For today’s Tip Tuesday, I thought I’d get a little technical and talk about one important aspect of social media: hashtags!

Regardless of your platform, users across every social media application use hashtags to as a means of classifying their content– sometimes they’re used ironically, sometimes they’re an inside joke, and sometimes they’re just a way to share what’s happening in a location or on a certain day. Whether you’re a business, a brand, or just a regular user, the easiest way to have fun with social media is to use trending hashtags to engage with users across the application, whether they’re your followers or not.

In any 24 hour period, different hashtags become popular based on what’s going on in the world– on Sunday, February 25th, here was one of the biggest trending hashtags: #FakeOlympicsFacts.

As you can see, a lot of hashtags are born out of pure goof off moments. There’s no marketing agenda behind them, nor is there any real point beyond having fun. And a brand or business can participate in them and have fun too… Just as long as their response is PG and Vanilla in nature. For the most success when using hashtags, it’s important to remember to stay away from political issues and other topics that could potentially offend followers. Here are some examples of brands using hashtags right:

The most popular time for brands to take advantage of trending topics and hashtags is when they know they can plan for it. Think cultural events that happen every year: like Back-to-School, The Super Bowl, and New Years Eve. Brands can prepare their own content (and yes, even their own hashtags!) in advance for these marketing moments.

Tip Tuesday: Track Relevant Statistics

4Do you ever feel like you’re in an insta-rut? Consider switching your profile over to a business account. Instagram will automatically calculate your most popular posts and allow you to see what aspects of your content are most popular with your followers!

Once you’re switched over, simply click the little graph button in the top right corner of your profile beside your username (second from the end!) Voila, all your social media stats at an arm’s reach!

With one simple upgrade, you can see are sorts of information about your followers– including your demographics and who is viewing your posts. Here’s a sample from our feed:

As you can see, we have a large female fan base that’s located right in our hometown, Edmonton! We also have a feed of all our most popular posts below. This information is helpful because it helps us not only see who our audience is, but it also tells us what kinds of posts they like.

With all this information, it can be hard to know which statistics to really pay attention to. We recommend clicking on your most popular posts and clicking on view insights. Here’s an example of a post we made around Christmas, before we had launched:

By viewing our insights we can see the most important statistics to track in Instagram: how many likes, how many comments, and how many bookmarks each of our posts had. We can also see how many profile visits that post gave us and how many people reached our website.

Given that this post was a simple Merry Christmas to our followers, we’re not surprised by the lack of major clicks– but tracking these statistics while you’re in the middle of a marketing campaign can tell you how many people are actively engaging with your social media and how successful your online marketing can be.

In general, I recommend switching to a business account especially if you’re a solo-entrepreneur or a small business who can’t afford professional social media marketing. It may require a little experimentation, but eventually it can really help you target your audience!

Tip Tuesday: Engage & Network With Your Following

Did you know that one of the easiest ways to build a social media presence is to engage with your followers and others within your product niche?

So what is social media engagement? To me, it’s the broadest term to describe how many likes, comments, clicks, and public shares your content receives after you post it. One of the most common questions I get about social media engagement is how to increase it– and luckily, the answer is simple: engage with other people’s posts as well!

Think about it like this: in the real world, how do you meet people? How do you market yourself? Well, the first step is always by saying hello and introducing yourself! In the online world, actions such as liking other people’s posts, commenting on their pictures, or following them are all small ways to get them to notice you and entice them into checking out your feed. Wouldn’t you be curious if someone you didn’t know liked your photo?

Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are all platforms built on the concept of interacting with each other’s posts, which means simply engaging with someone else’s content for as little as a few minutes a day is one of the easiest ways to build your audience. However, the one challenges most influencers and businesses face when using social media is picking which niches to target when they’re practicing engagement.

My best advice here is to take a look at who you want to be looking at your feed. Sure, in a perfect world we would want EVERYONE looking at our page and following us, but who is the most important?

For example, say you’re a Hair Stylist. You’re more likely to meet people who want to view your content by searching and engaging with posts in hashtags such as #hair, #hairstylist, or #hairtransformation than you would if you were searching more random hashtags, such as #instagood or #igdaily.

If you are ever stuck for ideas as to where to target engagement, you can never go wrong  with searching specific hashtags to target the physical community you’re located in. For example, Copper Social Co. is located in Edmonton, which means we’re always liking and commenting on posts in #yeg, #yeggers, #edmonton, and #yegdt.
